How your challenge number is calculated
Reduce your birth month, day and year each to a single digit, all the way down. Then do three subtractions, always the smaller from the larger: month and day, then day and year, then the two results from each other.
For example, 23 January 1998: the month is 1, the day 23 becomes 5, and the year 1998 becomes 27, then 9. So 5 minus 1 is 4, 9 minus 5 is 4, and 4 minus 4 is 0. The main challenge is 0.
What each challenge means
Choice. No single lesson is forced on you, so the work is deciding what to grow into.
Self reliance. Trusting your own judgement instead of waiting for others to decide.
Sensitivity. Not letting other people’s moods decide how you feel.
Self expression. The fear of being seen or judged for what you really think.
Limits. Working with structure and rules instead of fighting them.
Freedom and self control. Committing to one thing instead of keeping every door open.
Responsibility. Taking on too much for others, then resenting it.
Trust. Staying guarded even with people who have earned more of you.
Power and money. An uneasy relationship with ambition.
Questions
It is the lesson your life keeps bringing back, found from the gaps between the numbers in your birth date. It does not describe who you are. It describes what you keep running into.
The first two challenges come from your month and day, and your day and year, and tend to be strongest in certain periods of life. The third comes from the difference between those two and runs through your whole life, which is why it is called the main challenge.
A 0 means no single lesson is forced on you. That sounds easier, but it often means you have to choose what to work on yourself, without an obvious wall pushing back.
